Danny Rowe and his Danny Rowe Racing teammate Steve Matusek are gearing up for the first of three consecutive races on the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Series tour, beginning with this weekend’s 47th annual NHRA Summernationals, June 9-12. Rowe and Matusek enter the historic event sitting number two and three in points.
“Heading into Englishtown we have to find a way to start winning some races,” Rowe lamented. “The Top 10 cars are all very close except for Rickie [Smith], who has a pretty big lead on Steve and I even though we’re two and three in points.”
The Agave Underground drivers find themselves near the top of the points after Rowe raced to the final round at the season-opening NHRA Gatornationals in March. Matusek posted a quarterfinal finish there, then went one round further at the most recent race, the NHRA SpringNationals in Houston, Texas. Rowe and Matusek have qualified their Jimmy Rector-tuned, supercharged machines at all three races so far, an accomplishment in itself with NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Series races drawing up to 30 competitors fighting for a spot in the 16-car field.
With the next three weekends booked up with races in Englishtown, New Jersey; Bristol, Tennessee; and Norwalk, Ohio, the Danny Rowe Racing team took some time to prepare for the grueling string of races. First, Rowe and his 2015 C7 Corvette and Matusek and his Aeromotive ’68 Camaro took part in a four-car Real Pro Mod Association (RPM) match race at Bandimere Speedway near Denver. This week, they spent two days testing at Virginia Motorsports Park with promising results.
“Testing went great but you’re always looking to do a little more,” said Rowe, always expecting the most out of his California-based operation. “But we are leaving Virginia feeling we accomplished something.”
A three-race stretch is tough for any team, but Rowe is ready to tackle the challenge head-on, especially since it starts at Englishtown. The Pro Mod veteran won the NHRA Summernationals in 2011 and 2012, then set low elapsed time and top speed of the event in 2013.
“Our goal is to build up some consistency,” Rowe noted. “Keep going rounds and try to win every event we show up at. The next three races, which are all back-to-back, will be a good test of how all of the teams perform. But we are feeling very good about our team. We all had a meeting in Denver. Junior, Darryl, Karen, Chris, and Gary are all partners in helping Jimmy keep our program running. All of those guys made a commitment to do whatever it takes over the next three weeks. So I feel confident that we are prepared.”
Danny Rowe and Steve Matusek, drivers of the Agave Underground Tequila Pro Mods, will take to Old Bridge Township Raceway Park for the 47th annual NHRA Summernationals Friday, June 10, 2016 at 3:00PM EST for the opening round of qualifying. Qualifying will continue on Saturday, June 11, 2016, with a third and final session of qualifying at 3:30PM EST with the opening round of eliminations slated for 6:00PM EST. Final eliminations will continue on Sunday, June 12, 2016 at 12:45PM EST.
